Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 5 Recap

The episode is called “You Make My Heart Explode,” and it starts with Jo still in shock over the news that she’s pregnant with twins. Link, her partner, is caught off guard by her shock as he tries to help. Levi, meanwhile, is shocked to learn that James, the man he’s interested in— is already married, which makes their budding relationship more difficult.

In other news, Ben starts the day by giving Blue a lot of paperwork, but a new case quickly takes his attention away. The hospital cleaner Mr. Johnson passes out and Blue and Bailey are the first ones to help him. As they try to help Mr. Johnson with his health problems. Blue also has to deal with systemic healthcare barriers and insurance limits, which shows how angry he is with the system. When Simone steps in and asks Mr. Johnson to think about surgery for his son— who has special needs, the situation takes a touching turn.

At the same time, Levi and Lucas are given a difficult case involving Ofelia, a young girl who was badly hurt in a tractor accident. As they are airlifted with Ofelia, her condition gets worse because she may have been poisoned by phosphate. Lucas and Levi try to treat her in the middle of the flight. Even though Levi is nervous at first, he tells Ofelia’s parents that he and Lucas will do everything they can to take care of her. As storm clouds come in, they have to make a dangerous emergency landing. Back at Grey Sloan, Monica and Amelia are waiting anxiously for the helicopter but can’t get to it. Just as they start to think the worst is going to happen, Levi and Lucas show up with Ofelia and manage to calm her down in a show of skill and strength.

In a lighter side story, Winston tries to return Monica’s nightgown but finds that it doesn’t belong to her. This is a bit awkward. When Amelia walks in, she completely misunderstands what is going on, making the situation even worse. This is another problem that hasn’t been solved at Grey Sloan, where romance goes wrong all the time.

Teddy and Owen run into each other again when they treat Mr. Wheeler, a patient who is frantic to leave the hospital in time for his anniversary. Their work on his broken heart is both literal and figurative, since Mr. Wheeler’s relationship advice pushes them to deal with their own problems. As the tension between them rises, Owen does what Richard tells him to do and approaches his marriage with friendship instead of hostility. Mr. Wheeler’s heart surgery goes wrong— causing blood to spray all over the room. This chaotic event ultimately brings Owen and Teddy closer together and they agree on a date to get back together.

There is also some resolution in Levi’s story with James in this episode. James tells Levi that his husband has died when Levi finally asks him about his past. At this vulnerable moment, Levi and James’s bond grows stronger. James even calls Levi the best thing that has happened to him lately. In a different quiet but powerful moment— Amelia thanks Monica for being there and tries to clear up Winston’s confusion, which helps them both understand each other better.

As the day comes to a close, Lucas comes home to surprise Simone with a cozy dinner. As they kiss at the end of a day full of medical chaos, relationship drama and work problems, their romantic tension reaches a peak.
