Matlock Episode 3 Recap:
The episode begins with Matty attempting to stay out of the courtroom drama, but things quickly change when Olympia is forced to hand the reins over to her. Matty had been carefully planning ——how to get into Olympia’s phone and laptop because she thought the data on them was important for finding a link to a case that could have saved her daughter’s life. Matty had a plan in place for how she would do her secret investigation while working with Olympia and their team on a sensitive case of sexual assault at work.
The Case
This week’s main case was about Alex (Danielle Larracuente), a young woman who was fired and is now suing her boss Jeremy (Chad Coe) for sexual assault and wrongful termination. She said that Jeremy hit her at a work party, but the defense used her past to hurt her, which made things hard in court. Matty planned to be the background in this case. She planned to use her “bumbling grandma” act to get into Olympia’s phone and laptop. Things quickly changed, though.
A Change to the Plan
Alex insisted that Matty sit with her in court because she liked how friendly and down-to-earth Matty seemed. This ruined Matty’s plan to sneak away and look into what was going on. As the trial went on the defense brought up a sex tape made by Alex and — a former coworker that caused a lot of controversy. This made a big difference in how the jury saw things, which hurt Alex. Olympia knew they needed more help, so they hired Shae Banfield, (Yael Grobglas), a human lie detector who is also very good at tricking juries.
Matty felt nervous as soon as Shae walked in the room. Because she was so perceptive, it was easy for her to see through Matty’s carefully constructed front. Matty tried to avoid Shae, but she quickly picked up on her nervous energy and talked to her several times during the episode.
Matty Takes Charge
As things got heated in court, Olympia did something unexpected: she asked Matty to take over and question Jeremy— the boss who was accused of assault. Matty eventually found her footing, even though she looked tense and nervous. Jeremy told Matty about his past during her cross-examination, including a sexual assault conviction that had been erased. This new information was very important in getting the jury to rule again in Alex’s favor.
Matty’s Personal Revelation
When Matty made his closing argument, it was the most exciting part. At first, she seemed to blame Alex for the harassment, saying that women of her generation were expected to “suck it up” and stay away from places where harassment could happen. To make her point, she quickly changed the subject and talked about how painful it was to be harassed by a former coworker, Greg. Matty admitted that she had also downplayed her own pain, which had hurt her career goals in the end. She got to know the jury better by making this emotional confession— which changed how the case against Alex was seen.
Alex didn’t tell her boss for a long time. It was —Matty. She said that the real question was how bad it had to be for Alex to finally tell the truth and risk everything.
Alex won the case and was given $9 million by the jury because of Matty’s moving closing argument. Maty and Olympia danced together in private to celebrate, but Olympia quickly turned down Matty’s suggestion that they were going to be friends. Even though Matty had ulterior motives, this dance and Olympia’s pep talk earlier in the episode showed that the two were slowly becoming closer.
The Big Reveal
Even though Matty won the court case— his secret mission kept going. She got coffee on Olympia’s laptop earlier in the episode when she was by herself with it. At first, it looked like an accident that would cost the company an important tool. In a clever turn of events, it turned out that Matty had switched Olympia’s real laptop for a copy. Alfie— Matty’s tech-savvy grandson played by Aaron D. Harris, started going through Olympia’s files when he got home. They were hoping to find a smoking gun, but instead they found a touching voice message from Olympia’s father, who had just died. The message, “Give them the damn heavens, limbo and everything in between” was similar to what Olympia had told Matty before which made Olympia feel confused.
Matty’s choice to keep the laptop even though she knew what she had taken was valuable to her showed a growing moral dilemma. She was still dedicated to her investigation, but her growing love and respect for Olympia caused her to feel conflicted.
Episode 3 of Matlock was a mix of legal drama, character growth and strategic turns in the end. Matty’s day in court not only put her as a lawyer to the test— but it also showed how weak she was and how much she cared about the people around her, especially Olympia. Maty’s journey is getting more complicated and emotional as she juggles her work at the firm with her secret investigation.
