Princess Fienchen’s Funeral

Episode 5 starts with the sad funeral of Princess Fienchen. Elisabeth (Devrim Lingnau) is very sad and thinks she let her daughter down when she needed her the most. This makes her pain even worse. She gets angry because of her guilt and accuses Franz of taking her away from Fienchen when things were most important. When Sophia steps in to try to calm Elisabeth down, Elisabeth gets angry at her. You can feel the tension in the palace as everyone tries to deal with the loss.

Elisabeth’s Visit to the Woods

Because the palace is too stressful for her, Elisabeth runs away to her childhood home in Bayern. She spends her days wandering around in the forest, where she finds comfort in the trees but refuses to eat or talk to other people. She is very worried about Elisabeth and tries to pull her back from the edge of despair, but Elisabeth is set on her grief. She tells her sister Mimi not to marry for love because it will break her faith in both love and religion.

Franz’s Struggles in Vienna

Franz is unable to do his job when he gets back to Vienna because he is so sad. Reports from Milan show that Maximilian’s efforts to stop the resistance by building schools — and — other infrastructure have not worked as planned. The Minister of State, Buol (Leopold Hornung), tries to get Franz to give the order to use force against the rebels in Milan, but Franz barely pays him any attention.

Sophia tries to change the Emperor’s mood because she is worried about him. She even asks Louise to comfort Franz, which Louise at first turns down but later changes her mind about. But the meeting goes wrong when Franz, who is drunk and sad about Fienchen, thinks Louise is Elisabeth and tells her he loves her. Louise is heartbroken when she realizes that Franz only loves Elisabeth.

Maximilian’s Challenges in Milan

At the same time, Maximilian’s efforts to keep the peace in Milan are having a hard time. A general hurts him by forcing young men to join the military, which makes the people in the area angry. Maximilian confronts the general and fires him because he wants to keep a humane attitude. But his problems get worse when—Buol limits the money to Milan. This leaves Maximilian and his wife Marie scrambling to find answers. Because of the money problems—the couple gets into a heated argument, and Marie threatens to leave if Maximilian can’t fix things.

Elisabeth’s Awakening

Fienchen’s dream in the forest is what makes Elisabeth change her mind. She is finally able to break through her grief when her mother finds her the next morning and tells her to forgive herself and move on. Elisabeth starts to eat and gets ready to go back to Vienna, where she has to take care of her business.

Reunion and Reconciliation

Franz makes the choice to go to Bayern to bring Elisabeth home while she leaves for Vienna. They meet on the road, and the fact that they are both grieving helps them get back together and make peace. As a sign of understanding and compassion, Elisabeth writes a letter to Franz asking him to allow Helene to marry her true love, a man from a humble background.

The Brewing Storm

At the end of the episode, Napoleon talks about his plans to trick Franz into going to war with Piedmont. In Vienna, Buol takes advantage of Franz’s trust to make him doubt Maximilian’s plans in Milan. At the same time, Sophia faces her own ghosts when Margarete finds a scary painting from her childhood that makes her think of a trauma she has been trying to hide for a long time.
