Shrinking Season 2 Episode 12 Recap: “The Last Thanksgiving“: In the last episode of the season, Shrinking’s friends and family celebrate Thanksgiving but it’s not like any other holiday for them. As people get together for Thanksgiving, tensions rise and painful truths come to the surface. The holiday will make you think about love, loss, and healing.
Paul’s Sentimental Side
Paul, the always grumpy and sarcastic therapist, starts the episode by making plans to spend Thanksgiving by himself. He is excited to do “absolutely fuck-all” while his daughter and grandson are away. But Julie, who is always smart, knows better. She forces Paul out of his comfort zone by making him go to Gaby’s Thanksgiving dinner.
With this strange new family around him, Paul can’t help but think. His rare emotional speech sums up the show’s main idea—how important it is to have a support system and lean on each other when life gets tough.
Liz Finds Her Purpose
In this episode, Liz’s story comes full circle. She had been feeling aimless for most of the season but now she feels like she has a purpose by helping Brian and Charlie get ready to be dads. Derek encourages the couple to ask Liz to be their substitute nanny on days when their new hire can’t.
Liz’s personality has been annoying at times, but her journey shows how strong it is to do what makes her happy. Liz’s passion is taking care of and raising children, which she is clearly very good at. Even though this realization comes with some problems, it’s a satisfying end to her story.
Gaby’s Romantic Epiphany
Gaby is having a hard time with her love life because she likes to date men who need saving. She realizes how she is hurting herself after having an honest talk with Liz and Aliyah, and she decides to talk to Derrick.
Derrick tells her to take some time to work on herself, but he can’t help but go to Thanksgiving anyway. The happy chaos at the dinner gets even better when he shows up with Phyllis and his aunt. Gaby’s journey to learn more about herself could still grow in later seasons, but her steps toward better relationships feel real.
Jimmy and Alice’s Big Step Forward
Jimmy and his daughter Alice are at the center of the ending. Their relationship hits a touching turning point. Grief and guilt have been putting a strain on it. Jimmy finds it hard to tell Alice that he feels guilty for not being there for her after her mother died, but Paul’s advice pushes him to be honest.
At the same time, Alice gets clear with the help of Sean (Luke Tennie) , whose quiet wisdom makes it easier to forgive. If Jimmy and Alice finally have their long-awaited heart-to-heart, it will make you cry and heal you at the same time. Alice remembers a small but meaningful thing her dad did for her when he was really down—he carried her to bed when she fell asleep on the couch. The simple act made her remember that the dad she loved was still there, even though he was hurt.
James and Louis; A Pain They Both Feel
Jimmy’s journey takes him to Louis, the person who has made him angry for a long time. Louis reaches a breaking point as he deals with his own demons after being kicked out of Friendsgiving. When Jimmy finds him at the train station, they finally talk about how sad they both are.
Jimmy says that they both need to heal during their raw and honest conversation. As they talk about their problems together—it’s clear that this connection is very important for both of their recovery.
Everyone gets together for Thanksgiving dinner, whether they are family, friends, or even guests they didn’t expect. At the end of the episode, there is hope because each character has taken steps to heal and grow.
“The Last Thanksgiving” is a warm, funny and emotionally deep show that brings the season to a close. A good way to end a season that makes us think about how strong community is and how strong it is to be open and vulnerable.
