 Poppa’s House Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

As we learn about Poppa (Damon Wayans) in the first episode, he is a famous but irritable radio host at “Poppa’s House,” a popular R&B/Soul station in New York City. Early in the show, Poppa is enjoying a quiet morning in his kitchen when his son Junior (Damon Wayans Jr.), who is very unhappy with his job selling foam rollers for his father-in-law’s business, walks in. Even though Junior wants to be a movie director, he feels stuck in his current job because his father-in-law, JJ (Geoffrey Owens), not only hired him but also helped him buy the family home.

Papa is having a hard time accepting Junior’s new-age way of parenting. At the same time, things are changing at the radio station. The station executives hire psychologist Dr. Ivy Reed (Essence Atkins) to bring some new energy to Poppa’s show because they think his grumpy personality is turning people off. Poppa doesn’t like having Ivy around or the idea of giving her access to his platform— which makes it awkward for them to talk to each other.

When Junior says he missed an important meeting at work and was fired because of it, things get worse. Nina, Junior’s wife, is upset about this news. She is fed up with him not being able to find a stable job and their unstable finances— especially since she wants to send their kids to private school. Poppa and Nina beg JJ to help them get Junior’s job back because they really want to help him.

The episode shows how Poppa and JJ are competing with each other, with funny jabs and fun chatter. After JJ offers Junior his job back, he makes him promise to work toward becoming a manager. Junior reluctantly agrees to do this, at least for now.

Poppa thinks about his own career as he tries to get used to how his family works. The changes in the radio business scare him. especially the idea of adding video to his show, which he strongly opposes. Poppa decides to face his fears and go back to the station with a better attitude after Junior told him to do so.

He quickly goes back to his old ways, though, when he gets back, and they start arguing on air with Ivy. The tension rises when Ivy tells Poppa how much she admired him in college, which makes him seem a little less tough for a moment. People find their interaction on air funny, and some even compare them to an old married couple.

At the end of the episode, there is a hint that both Poppa and Junior have grown. Poppa is still dealing with the changes in his life and career, but Junior is left to balance his responsibilities with his dreams. The first episode of “Poppa’s House,” which has both funny and sad moments sets the tone for what looks like it will be a fun show about family life.

As the credits roll, viewers are left wondering how Poppa, Junior, and their family will handle the problems that lie ahead. This makes “Poppa’s House” an interesting show to follow as it grows.
