The world of shadows of technology and societies will continue to deepen soon as Black Mirror Season 7 is going to be filmed. This new season is set to begin production in London on September 27, 2024, though the plot and timeframe will obviously differ from the prior season, tuning the viewers in to the series’ usual delivery of the disturbing impact of modern technology through satire.

The new season is expected to go on production in just a few weeks, which will solidify Black Mirror’s place back on the television as one of the platforms with the most mind-bending narratives. Shooting in London, the show has many interesting landscapes and actual textures of the modern megacity which should bring a specific mood to the series.

The series creator and writer is Charlie Brooker so it means that the show will remain as provocative as before. With him are David Slade and Toby Haynes on directing duties in the new episode.

The team that will be in charge of the production will comprise of the Line producer, Simon Bird, the producers Annabel Jones, Mark Kinsella, Jessica Rhodes, and Richard Webb. It is believed that due to their experience they should capture the essence of Brooker’s vision at par with the impeccable quality that has been seen in the series.

The cinematographer for the season is Stephan Pehrsson who will maintain the series’ creepy and environ-based shots and feels, and Jina Jay will be the Casting Director for the series.

Of course, Black Mirror will features a few stand-alone episodes, but each episode will be centered around the different aspects of technological darkness. There is drama, psychological horror, political satire, and more rarely but perhaps more unexpectedly, romantic comedy, in the show set to go on dissecting modern fears and phantasms.

The next season looks as if it’s going to explore the darker side of the digital age further, which seems to be the direction Brooker is interested in observing the society’s dynamic relationship with. Armchair, fans will be presented with controversy and food for though, and probably some rude shocks as well.

As of now, Black Mirror Season 7 is scheduled to be released on Netflix in 2025. The exact release date has not been announced yet, but the production is expected to wrap up in late 2024 or early 2025, leading up to the release later in the year. Keep an eye out for official announcements from Netflix for the precise release date!

Aaron Pierre: Is Netflix’s Rebel Ridge Inspired by a True Story?

0
Rebel-Ridge-2024

Rebel Ridge is a new action thriller by Jeremy Saulnier that tells a rather tense story that takes place in the small town of Shelby Springs. The protagonist at the center of the movie is Terry Richmond played by Aaron Pierre that is against an unethical local police team led by Chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson). While trying to post bail for his cousin using his earnings, he is arrested and robbed, which drives him to try to get his money back as well as try to fight injustice that has taken over the town.

Is Rebel Ridge a True Story?

As much as Rebel Ridge tells an interesting plot of a single individual standing up against a corrupt system, it is a work of fiction not based on real life Jeremy Saulnier who has a very detailed and rather dramatic approach to filmmaking applies elements of the action and Western movie genres to his screenplay. The storyline is similar to the action theme of an earlier Stallone film First Blood where an ex- marines renegade turned Vietnam War hero, behavioural complexities similar to Rambo becomes the focus of a man hunt involving a small police com Townsend.

Terry Richmond, the film’s protagonist, is also similar to the classic lone hero of Sergio Leone Dollars Trilogy. Saulnier had hoped that Terry would inhabit something closer to The Man with No Name character type, trying to hack his way through a bad situation like many of the Western ‘heroes’. ‘The main idea is that Terry rides a bike instead of a horse, and the less one knows about his background, the better,’ Saulnier added with a reference to the conventional concepts of the Western hero’s quest.

However, what is unique to Rebel Ridge is the attention to institutional corruption and gray areas of evenness. In contrast to this, what Saulnier has portrayed is how the systems they work within are complex in one way or the other and the effects that come with it on people. While it does not start with an action scene, the film establishes a well-grounded setting in which people struggle with their places within the tainted organizations.

Speaking to Polygon, Saulnier said that he wanted his game to be an action game with a twist, showing the social structure of institutions. It explained that here the main purpose was to create a standard American action movie with ideally more depth. This emphasis on minute aspects of institutional breakdowns with respect to the context of justice and reparations is characteristic of Saulnier’s works.

Corruption in the film is not just used as a backdrop but it is an event that the movie focuses on. This plot based on Saulnier’s personal feelings or interest in justice and what he has gone through. ”My research paved the avenue as much as the provocation of the revelation of how constitutional guarantees are not guaranteed in the least,” he disclosed. The film successfully establishes the notion that corruption is not only manifested through oppression but also with societal compliance and legal intimidation.

Don_Johnson-

In Rebel Ridge, it starts with a man called Terry Richmond a spirited man who wakes up in a terrible position after being knocked down by a police car. Terry has got a lot of cash in form of bails and is on his way to buy the release of his cousin who is in jail. After the police headed by the rotten Chief of police Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson) discover the money behind its truth, they take the money away and use the situation to their benefit.

When Terry fails to get the money he almost suffers from the corrupted police force back in his home town. He attempts to report the theft through the legal authorities, but his attempts are in vain. The film takes a deeper look at social issues such as corruption and racism, and portrays how the new system of policing hides injustice behind a liberal veneer.

Terry’s motivic arc turns into as much of a fight against the systemic rot of the small-town police as it is for his cousin’s liberty. Action sequences filled up the movie with some of them being well choreographed and showing tactical sharpness of Terry and his desire. As a former soldier, his experience is extremely helpful when he comes up with a strategy that will help to arrest the corrupt officers and recover the stolen cash.

It is a story of one’s journey as a person who is in the system receiving its numerous shortcomings and then contrasting it with the same system where they work trying to make sense of their existence. Not only this, but as Terry try to battle against all these odds, there are also presented the failings and cruelties of the system in front of which he is fighting. Finally, it’s Terry who doesn’t relent and the action that follows defines a thrilling story of the fight against the imperfect system.

Finally, it is worth to notice that Rebel Ridge is one of the best examples of modern thriller which is not only interesting to watch but also to think about. What unites action and Western films of the past with the contemporary problem of corruption, Saulnier forms a unique movie, which has both, timeless and timely motifs.

Hence, despite the fact that Rebel Ridge is an imaginary story, it represents a unique perspective on people’s frailty and social inequality. What will be received by the audiences when they will immerse themselves into this dark and edgy thriller is the story of an individual up against the systemic rot or the battle of one man against his corrupt system depending upon how one would want to look at the narrative.

Fight Night: Who was Gordon “Chicken Man” Williams? Where is Chicken Man Now?

Fight Night checken man-

The Heist’s Fallout and Chicken Man’s “Death”

After the robbery, the day that no one could imagine it, many legends circulated around Chicken Man. Within less than 48hrs after the heist, Williams was said to have been shot dead by mobsters in what appeared to be a contract killings. From the detectives’ account, underworld was dissatisfied with manner in which the theft happened and many thought that Williams had laid the foundation for his failure.

The story of Chicken Man’s death remained popular for many years and most people throughout were convinced that he was killed out of revenge for the failed robbery. But the real fact was even more stunning.

The Resurrection of Chicken Man

One day in the early 2000s, Jeff Keating, the person behind the Fight Night podcast, found J.D. Hudson, the first Black detective in Atlanta and the man who investigated the robbery. In the course of the conversation, Hudson let a bombshell out on Gordon Williams who is popularly known as Chicken Man – that he was alive. Indeed he was alive and kicking under the new identity of Rev. Gordon Williams at Salem Baptist Church.

Many people were surprised by this revelation especially those who earlier assumed that Chicken Man was killed after the heist. Hudson is now retired and he himself told Jack that he has his own doubts as to whether Williams was involved in the robbery, that Chicken Man was “too smart” to jeopardize everything he had going for himself on a one shot deal.

‘I knew [Williams] wasn’t dumb enough to pull a stunt like that,’ Hudson said. “This was a man who had a large-scale business and was successful in making million dollars from a pay phone at a street corner and there is no way he could have jeopardized all this to pay somebody off. ”

On the next encounter in 2004, Chicken Man himself states that he did not participate in the heist explaining the reason why he is alive. Having no other choice Williams said, “I knew I was a dead man when I saw my picture in the paper because they made it look like I had something to do with it.” “But I myself was not included. ”

Where is Chicken Man Now?

Despite this, Williams successfully remained anonymous for several years before the event of his death on 1 December 2014. J. D. Hudson, the man who learned about the truth about the murder and Williams’ innocence passed on In June 2009.

The legend of Chicken Man lives on through stories like Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, however, little is known about what exactly transpired on that fateful night of 1970. What we do know is that Gordon “Chicken Man” Williams was more than just a hustler – he was a survivor, a man whose life was imoprtant symbol of the civilized Messianic Atlanta and at the same time murderous criminal “kingdom”.

Is Taraji P. Henson’s Character Vivian Thomas in Fight Night Based on a Real Person?

0
Vivian Thomas played by Taraji P

In the thrilling limited series Fight Night: In The Million Dollar Heist, the audience meets the character of Vivian Thomas, a powerful woman, played by Taraji P. Henson. While she’s a fictional character in the story, she is partially inspired by a real person: Barbara Smith girlfriend to Gordon “Chicken Man” Williams who was involved in one of the largest robberies in Atlanta. Therefore, how similar is Vivian Thomas to the real life?

The Real Barbara Smith and the 1970 Heist

The same year in 1970 Barbara Smith had the misfortune of being involved in a heist that occurred after a boxing match in Atlanta. Her boyfriend, found in this context as Gordon “Chicken Man” Williams was a hustler with criminal inclinations, and both owned a house, in the Collier Heights’, which became a conduit for the ‘million-dollar heist’. On 26th October 1970, while the entire city was keenly watching Muhammad Ali’s boxing match, Barbara was engaged in a party planning.

However what unfolded in the following night was a complete anarchy and a very perilous night. The robbers who wore black masks and were armed to the teeth invaded the house at gunpoint thereby taking the guests hostage including Barbara. As more proactive than the real Barbara, with whom she was compared, the character Vivian Thomas was a protagonist of fiction and had no other choice but to obey.

Vivian Thomas vs. Barbara Smith

Chicken Man girlfriend-

Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist series enhances the part played by Barbara Smith through the personality of Vivian Thomas. Whereas, Barbara was a real lady who was a victim and accidentally dancing on the party, Vivian is depicted as a women, strong and determined. One of the scenes to capture a viewer’s attention is when Vivian is forced to dance by one of the robbers — a storyline that is not realistic in any way. This creative liberty in the show is intended to focus on one of the robber’s cruelty and to make the storyline more suspenseful.

Vivian’s character is also romanticized in fiction when she escapes with Chicken Man another episode never witnessed in the real sense. Actually, in the reality, one of the hostages Barbara and other had to accompany the robbers during their escape. The robbers later let the women go and also provided them with cash to hire a cab and go back to the house.

Barbara Smith life After the Heist

In the film Fight Night, the character of Vivian Thomas becomes more layered, and her struggle is revealed after the robbery incident; however, the real-life Barbara Smith returned to her simple life after the robbery. After the robbery, she and Chicken Man proceeded to the police station to state their innocence claiming like everyone else, they were victims. After that, Barbara faded from the public and by June of 1971, reports in The Atlanta Journal and Constitution Magazine suggested that she had gone out of sight.

On the other hand, Vivian Thomas’s character progress in Fight Night is of her becoming empowered and moving on to a better station in life with the experience. During an interview with Vanity Fair Taraji P. Henson for her part in emphasize that she has a strong woman who works for herself and try to use her problems as the motivation for the young American dream. This kind of character evolution is imaginary and is used to ensure that Vivian has a hero like status in the series.

Talking of the role she played in Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, Taraji P. Henson described it as a “full-circle moment” in her storied career, expressing intense emotion. She thought about how this production ties together her career, having collaborated with such notables as Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Kevin Hart, and Terrence Howard. Henson said she was afraid of being blackballed following her public remarks against Hollywood’s pay disparity during the press tour for The Color Purple, but she ended up feeling more empowered. She wants other women to feel empowered to speak up in challenging circumstances by her performance in Fight Night.

Why the Changes?

The change of main character’s name from Barbara Smith to Vivian Thomas a more alive and significant character is a typical feature in many real life stories movies. As much as Barbara played the real-live heist as a key-member, her victim-supporting role might not have had the bang for the television series. In crafting Vivian Thomas, the series writers could get at the perhaps complicated and meaty issues of the heist’s aftermath, but also really investigate the life of a Black woman in mid-1970s America.

To sum up, Vivian Thomas is not a realistic representation of the real life Barbara Smith; however, the character is based on her with a lot of dramatization added for the sake of the plot. However, true story of Barbara Smith may not be as exciting a story as depicted in Fight Night but it is an assured part of the history of Atlanta and America, which this writing brings out effectively in the mash up of fact and fiction. For exclusive insights and the latest on Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, visit otavo.tv.

Peacock’s Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist—Where Was It Filmed?

Fight Night The Million Dollar Heist

Peacock’s Fight Night: Million Dollar Heist is a thrilling new series which has been set in the 1970s Atlanta. The show is inspired by a real-life robbery plot that went down in the city’s underground and enacts a gripping criminal story of a post-Mohammad Ali fight party turned robbery. Starring dearly loved actors such as Kevin Hart, Samuel L. Jackson, Taraji P. Henson and many others, it is a show that gives an audience an adrenaline rush. But where exactly this action-packed show got shoot? Now let us take a look at the shooting sites that gave such a historical motion picture a perfect aesthetics.

Metro Atlanta, Georgia: The Heart of the Heist

As much as Fight Night is based in 1970s the actual shooting of the show was conducted in today’s metro Atlanta. As a city that boasts both timely and timeless skyscrapers Atlanta is perfect for recreating the world of this heist. Principal photography phase commenced in February  2024, majority of the shots were done in several locations in and around Atlanta. The city locations such as Paschal’s Restaurant & Bar, and Hotel Clermont were staged to give the feel of high-society society that forms the backdrop of heist.

Paschal’s Restaurant & Bar

Peacock Fight Night The Million Dollar Heist - Paschal Restaurant and bar

One of the most significant scenes presented in Fighter Night is in Paschal’s Restaurant & Bar which is an historic soul food restaurant in Atlanta. The restaurant situated at 180 Northside Drive Southwest is famous not only for its food but also historical connection with the Civil Rights Movement. I think in the show it is one of the primary settings for the after-party scene in which the heist starts. The work of producing the space to represent the glamourous time of 1970 was well accomplished to enhance the criminal touch.

Hotel Clermont Atlanta

Peacock Fight Night The Million Dollar Heist Hotel Clermont Atlanta

Another important place is the clad building which is known as the Hotel Clermont situated at 789 Ponce De Leon Avenue Northeast. Packed with energy and colour, which was a testament to its bohemian charm, Hotel Clermont was perfect for some of the more amorous scenes on screen. Some of its features and its overall look gives off that classic feel that gave an old world feel for the show to integrate well with the general theme of the series.

Assembly Studios: The Behind-the-Scenes Magic

Most of Atlanta’s streets featured in several scenes and stunts but the major filming took place at Assembly Studios in Doraville Georgia. While the more elaborate and carefully choreographed episodes were filmed at the state of the art studio with 22 sound stages and purpose built sets. Assembly Studios also provided for numerous production facilities including complex lighting techniques all the way to costume construction. Using all the resources available, the studio grew to be a primary place where the world of Fight Night was conceptualized.

Collier Heights: A Real Connection to History

Peacock Fight Night The Million Dollar Heist location

Naturally, one of the uniquely interesting features of Fight Night might be the use of actual location of a heist in the movie. Exterior scenes were shot at the actual actual ‘Chicken Man’ party house in Collier Heights which made the realism to the series more realistic. It is interesting to note that the show had a local angle: the star of the series, Samuel L. Jackson, is intimately familiar with the setting. Not only did he get married at a church nearby 30 yrs ago, but he also lived the same time in Atlantas history. This connection made a whole lot of difference in his acting as well as his understanding of the time enriching the show even more.

Atlanta’s Living History

Atlanta is not only a setting where Fight Night was filmed but it plays much bigger part in the show. The role of the city is rather significant as the cultural and historical background of the composition. Creator Shaye Ogbonna also.at how Atlanta’s racial dynamics shaped the show during the time it was set. The separated facilities emphasized the existence of racism in society in which black police officers were prohibited to arrest whites and vice versa; whites only. This is not a typical case of robbers and thieves; it is a social commentary on an important point in Atlanta’s history and Atlanta turns into a character in the play.

Wrapping Up the Shoot

Principal photography was completed in June 2024 when the four hectic months of shooting this crime drama thriller successfully took place elaborated below. In the words of director Shaye Ogbonna who stated that work was one of the most inspiring projects he has ever worked on in his career. What makes this series stand out is that one can truly see that the cast and crew members all care about the telling of this story and the history of Atlanta play an important role in this.

In the end, Fight Night: Akin to most Tarantino movies, The Million Dollar Heist is as much a story about the narrative city of Atlanta as it is a narrative about the robbery itself. Shooting in Metro Atlanta with many historical backgrounds and modern studios gave the possibility to film a bright realistic story based on real events. It’s a show that tells the story of the time, place and people and Atlanta you can see the character of that city in every frame.

If you are looking for a modern heist drama full of suspense, do not miss Fight Night. So, bear this in mind every time you watch it, because even though the film is based in 1970s, the Atlanta depicted in this movie is more than real today.

Is Taraji P. Henson’s Character Vivian Thomas in Fight Night Based on a Real Person?

Is Stephen DeMarco a Narcissist or a Sociopath in Tell Me Lies?

0
Stephen DeMarco tell me lies-

In Hulus Tell Me Lies, based on Carola Lovering’s novel, Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White) is portrayed as a highly manipulative, often cruel character, raising the question: tells me that he is a narcissist, a sociopath, or perhaps something far different? The answer is, of course, obscured in the loose definition of personality and psychological scars making Stephen both complex and boring to observe.

The Psychologist’s Take: Narcissistic and Sociopathic Tendencies

Tell Me Lies features Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) who, in one of the show’s significant moments, goes through a series of emotions after a tumultuous on-and-off relationship with Stephen, and seeks the help of a psychiatrist. The doctor, having heard about Stephen’s manipulations and his emotional abuse, suggests that Stephen exhibits “narcissistic and sociopathic tendencies. ” While this is not a formal diagnosis, it’s a strong indication of the traits Stephen exhibits: There is little compassion in him, he gets pleasure in domination over others and does not know how it is possible to have a normal friendship with other people.

In interviews, Carola Lovering herself described Stephen as a ‘sociopathic womanizer’, which means that she designed him with these specific characteristics in mind. Oddly enough, Lovering drew Stephen from real life, and maybe that is why his negativity is real also; he is a part of Lovering’s experience.

The Show vs. The Book: Is Stephen really a sociopath?

As I watched the show, in relation to Stephen’s character, some details are a little more elaborated than in the book. For example, while the novel’s Stephen is portrayed as almost entirely sociopathic, the Hulu adaptation shows him to be a bit more complex than that. In many ways, the series does this and shows moments where he is caring and tender, thus giving the viewer a reason why women, like Lucy, are inclined towards him.

Actor Jackson White, who portrays Stephen one of the clan members he says his character is not just evil. He tries to understand that Stephen creates vandals’ acts because of severe pains that affected his psyche and growing up with a manipulative mother. This interpretation offers some explanation for Stephen’s actions: because of the lack of proper influence of social skills that he had as he grew up in a home where manipulation was the order of the day, Clinto starts to manipulate those around him too.

Stephen’s Manipulative Nature: An Apocalyptic Result?

Stephen DeMarco and mother Norah tell me lies

Throughout series, one can understand the family background which might have contributed to Steven’s behavior. His mother Norah (Katey Sagal), for instance, is cold and controlling and puts a shaft on her children, most especially, Stephen. Thus, Stephen’s bitterness is all about manipulation and control, which he transfers to his romantic and friendships.

Even though it describes the reasons of his behaviour, it does not justify it. Conclusively, the pain which has been internalized in Stephen transforms him to the subject of hatred – his mother. He moves from lie to manipulation to engaging others into his psychological twirl.

Narcissist or Sociopath: Where Does Stephen fit in?

If we were to look at Stephen basing on his actions, we would easily type castle him as narcissistic. But he needs approval, is dominating in interpersonal relationships, and lacks remorse when he has harmed others, as is seen in Narcissistic Personality Disorder. He may have a moral side to him but his calculated killings, calculated moves, the fact that he cannot show emotions, the way he uses people for his own requirements are all signs of a sociopath.

All in all, Stephen DeMarco is an excellent example of a fictional character who is very close to being narcissistic psychopath. He might demonstrate both LP andPD tendencies, but a person of shock becomes a work of tragedy that does not justify his actions, but which stands behind rather complex personality behind a veil of a manipulator. Stephen is the perfect example of how those early stories can become toxic if not countered with a better follow-up narrative at some point in life.

While watching Tell Me Lies, the viewers watch a character, who while not likely to be loved, cannot be looked past due to his motives. My main character is not simply a narcissist, a sociopath, or both: he is a multifaceted man with the past trauma and the streak of darkness within.

Outlast Season 2 Filming Location: Where Was Outlast Season 2 Filmed?

Outlast season 2 set-

Outlast is an intense American reality survival show that began to attract the attention of the audience with a difficult concept and the exclusion of any manipulation of the contestants’ abilities. The first season of this show started airing on Netflix on March 10, 2023. One of the reality TV shows that formally arranged 16 participants into four teams and confronted them to Alaskan harshness.

This show puts these people in a position where they have very little food and must rely on their skills and cooperation to defeat other teams to win $1,000,000. The winners of Outlast Season 1 were the Charlie Camp team, consisting of Seth Lueker, Paul Preece, and Nick Radner. It is a challenge that is fraught with high stakes and the parameters of the game are severely testing, both physically and mentally.

Where Was Outlast Season 2 Filmed?

For its second season, Outlast went back to the Alaskan terrains but in a different location. The first season was shot on Chichagof Island, close to the Neka River, west of Juneau while the second season shot the contestants to the Little Duncan Bay Alaska, which is really tough terrains.

Outlast Season 2 set on Kupreanof Island in Alaska, specifically around Little Duncan Bay. The shoot was accomplished between October 9 and November 18 of the year 2023. This place offered the right environment for the survival challenge.

The location also had camps that the production team established near the shoreline and in some foresets. Further, contestants could go out in search for more food, where they could hunt, trap and forage. They employed firewood fallen on the ground and branches of trees which they cut for both warmth and shelter purposes.

Little Duncan Bay is the location that presents the unique and rough conditions for the contestants. This area has low temperatures, lots of trees, and steep shorelines meaning that this season comes with different challenges as compared to the previous season. The place is as dangerous as it can get with the water in the bay being unbearably cold, thus making survival even harder. Working under these conditions just adds pressure of performing while competing for the grand prize, and thus makes the survival all the harder.

Contestants were 16 and the staff was 46, that is why the crew was sorting documents and everything in shifts. Moreover, no matter how many people remained in the camps, there were 8 of them at each of them: 4 contestants as well as 4 crew members. To facilitate the work, the crew used one boat for an operation center which was called a ‘floating office.’

Used equipment for filming include Sony FX6, GoPro Cameras, Drones as well as Special Night Vision Cameras. For safety the team employed use of a portable radio repeater that was solar power boosted together with a portable toilet boat for waste disposal. Logically, there were no attempts to set up constructed scenes, there were no sets or props, which was nice as everything was shot on location.

The cast of Outlast Season 2 features a diverse group of contests: Bayardo (Bayo) Hernandez, Brendon Ash, Bri Watson, Deontre (Tre) Thomas, Drake Vliem, Drew Haas, Emily Johnston, Eric Shevchenko, Joey DiDesidero, Joseph Malbrough, Julio Laboy, Meghan Buchanan, Sammy Norris, Tina Grimm, Tonia Willman, and Zach Owens. Each brings their unique skills and experiences to the challenging competition.

The contestants in Outlast Season 2 were quite different compared to the first season of the show. The first season featured many conflicts and aggressive actions from competitors; however, Season 2 has been praised as competitors acted more focused on their survival against the nature rather than one another.

Mike Odair, the showrunner argued that the crew changed few things from the first season. However, it was the cast that dictated the nature of the show or the kind of humor that was used in a show. Odair pointed out, the survivalists themselves determined how to choose different ways to play the game as compared to the prior season aggression here and there.

“We didn’t go into season two thinking ‘how can we correct this?’” Odair said. “I think the luxury given to any second-season cast is that they’re going to see what their predecessors did.”  However, this change of direction was recognized by the audience and critical acclaim as the viewers considered Season 2 to be less predictable and more informative series about the survival of groups.

All the contestants have different strengths and education, from trappers and hunters to rocket scientists and participants of the War. This is due to the fact that people from various backgrounds and experiences give the show more dimensions and the show focuses on the issues of existence in one of the harshest environments on the planet.

Outlast Season 2 remains to be as challenging as the first season to the surviving participants and budding reality show enthusiasts as the star of the show –Alaska – offers dramatic thrills as well as educational value to the audiences.

Sunny Season 1 Ending: Is Masa Dead or Alive?

0
Sunny episode 10 Hidetoshi Nishijima as Masa dead or alive-

Apple TV+’s Sunny Season 1 has left fans with a lot of questions, but the biggest one revolves around Masa (Hidetoshi Nishijima): Is he alive or is he dead? A number of hints are provided in the last episode but no definitive answer is provided as the audience has to solve puzzles on their own.

The Plane Crash and Masa’s Disappearance

Masa’s disappearance is portrayed as beginning with a plane crash that is assumed to have killed him and their son, Zen. This is a tragedy that mkakes  Masa’s wife Suzie (Rashida Jones) discover a number of shocking issues over her husband. As she travels further into his past Suzie discovers that Masa was a long way from the man she married. He was into robotics they had Yakuza connections, and he never mentioned any of this to her, or to anybody else. However, despite with all these new informations the question of his fate is still left open.

The Letter at the Cabin

In the last episode, two Suzie and Zen go for a cabin which has an attachment with Masa’s family. Here Suzie traces a letter from Masa. In it, he writes that he did all that wrong just to make Suzie happy and adds that if she finds the letter then perhaps there’s still change for them. This line is important because it shows that Masa thought there was a chance either for him and/or for the situation that they are in now.

What the Letter Could Mean

There are two main ways to interpret this letter:

Masa Is Alive: The letter might have been a way for Masa to express himself to Suzie in the hope of stating that he is still around somewhere waiting for the opportune moment to return. This can be explained by the fact that new yakuza leader, Hime (You Ehara), throws Suzie Masa’s shoes – which is a death gesture. But this could be a way of telling Suzie that Masa is dead when in actual sense he is in a hide out. Masa’s return could be a good concern in the second season in which he could unveil some of his real intentions and the threats facing them.

Masa Is Dead, But His Legacy Lives On: On the other hand the letter could be quite symbolic in nature/ All the same, the letter could be a figure of speech. Suzie’s father Masa may be dead however he left behind Sunny the AI he created for the safety of Suzie. Indeed, her behavior indicates that she might have a portion of Masa’s consciousness: she helps him take care of Suzie even when he is gone.

Several elements in the finale hint at Masa’s true fate

Sunny’s Programming: Sunny behaves as if she knows somethings only Masa would, meaning that she has the knowledge of Masa. This was something that could mean Masa transferred part of the himself into Sunny and thus enable him to direct Suzie even if he has been dead.

Hime’s Actions: For instance, the possibility of Hime giving Suzie Masa’s shoes is an indication he is dead, or just fooling Suzie to believe the man is dead. If it is the latter then Masa might have faked his death just to avoid the continued danger of his family.

The Big Question: Is Masa alive or is he dead?

Thus the question; Is Masa alive or is he dead? The show never reaches any conclusions, regarding this, and it is up to the viewers to make their own conclusions. He may be alive now perhaps in a disguise waiting for the right moment to go over to Suzie and Zen. Or he might truly be gone, but incorporated Sunny with him – meaning that Sunny is really Orwell. The answer might be given in a potential second season, but for now, Masa’s fate is one of Sunny’s biggest unanswered questions.

SUNNY, an American black comedy-drama streaming television series on Apple TV+ concludes its first season with an intriguing and powerful episode in “The Dark Manual” directed by Colin Bucksey and written by Katie Robbins & Aja Gabel.  The show is a TV adaptation of Colin O’Sullivan’s novel about an American woman who is living in Kyoto. When her husband Masahiko Sakamoto aka Masa (Hidetoshi Nishijima) along with their son Zen Sakamoto (Fares Belkheir) perish in a plane crash, Suzie Sakamoto (Rashida Jones) finds herself lost in the complex web of darkness, deceit and powered by the ghost of seemingly innocuous domestic companion robot Sunny.

The finale, set against the backdrop of the Japanese festival of Setsubun, brings several key plots to a head: Suzie’s unexpected reunion with Zen, Hime’s vicious attempt to seize control of the Yakuza, and the terrifying endeavor to turn Sunny’s AI programming into a weapon. When Suzie struggles to save her son and find out the truth about Masa, the audience experiences a plot twist that keeps both Suzie and Sunny’s future uncertain, as it relates to technological advancement, trust, and deceit.

Sunny Season 1 Episode 10 Recap

The final episode of Sunny starts with the festival called Setsubun in traditional Japanese culture, which signifies the start of spring. The central spiritual activity of the festival is bean tossing to chase away the evil spirits by saying ‘devil out, happiness in’, this concept of negation of all things evil is seen a lot throughout the episode and sets the tone for the darkness that ensues. Masa, Suzie’s husband, narrates this scene despite his mysterious absence, quoting a phrase: Among these, one which is entitled “Oni Ni Kanbo,” which translates to “If you give a metal club to an Oni (demon), it becomes invincible.” The phrase is a metaphor for the situation at hand, foreshadowing the deadly power struggles ahead.

The story abruptly jumps to a period of several years after a coup within the Yakuza organisation. Hime (You Ehara) is a heartless and strategic person inside the clan; she kills her cousin Jin to take the leadership of the clan’s business. Regarding to the gesture, it can be as for the representation of Hime transforming into the “Oni” holding the metal club in which she holds the power of terror. The murder is shown to be very clinical – Hime tricks Jin that they can finally end this fight by using their family wine that they both Liked. During the Setsubun celebrations, Hime takes advantage of the moment and stabs Jin with a piece of the broken glass which makes it both calculated and efficient.

At the same time we meet Suzie, an American woman whose life turns upside down because of the vanishing of her husband and her son which has been later found and she meets her son Zen. Their happiness is cut short with arrival of Hime to the scene. Hime, being selfish all along, confines Suzie, Zen and their friends in a cage like prison. Hime’s boyfriend has been shot dead by an AI known as Sunny, Suzie’s companion and now Hime is after getting something known as the ‘weaponized code’ from the AI.

sunny episode 10 recap - Jun Kunimura

Yuki Tanaka (Jun Kunimura), Hime’s technophilic partner and Masa’s former co-worker, leads Sunny to a truck, in order to attempt to disconnect her head and steal the code. But as he tries to decode Sunny’s coding he accidentally destroys the circuitry of his laptop due to the explosion and is rendered helpless with the hack. This failure only pauses for a moment Hime’s plan but the danger continues. Suzie is informed that Masa is no more in the world to which Hime responds by informing Suzie that she has even ushered her a pair of shoes belonging to Masa. However, Suzie can’t accept that and she still holds on to the fact that Masa is alive.

During this anarchy Zen begins to show Suzy a loose tooth that signalize innocence amidst the complex and dangerous skirmish. Suzie fearing for the safety of her son brings him to meet Mixxy and Hiromasa during their attempt to escape. Zen’s childish comment about Suzie not having friends indeed provides an element of black comedy to the tension-filled scene.

Back in the truck, it was shown that Tanaka could not succeed in hacking Sunny’s system but he actually saved her from erasing her memory which contains the important code. According to the tech-expert Hiromasa, a bot cannot kill people per se since that is not its programming; however, there is a trick to ‘rewire’ the AI to see a wooden rod as a gun. This revelation means more because the Yakuza could use Sunny’s code to reprogram other bots to become killers.

Suzie is shocked to hear her communication device suddenly ring and looks round to see that Zen has taken it with him as the group contemplates their next move. The call is from Noriko Sakamoto (Judy Ongg), Suzie’s mother in law, who has a hard time following what is going on as explained by Suzie through the device that is concealed in Zen’s pocket. When they meet each other during a conversation Zen greases Noriko’s future abusive step father physically. Thus Noriko currently in prison, manages to twist events to her advantage – she physically threatens the son of a fellow inmate, who coincidentally works at the prison where Suzie has been taken and is held captive. This threat makes the guard open the door for Suzie and the group to run into a clutch Setsubun festivities.

On the other hand Hime’s plan to exterminate Jin is worked out with tacticalcalculations. In what appears to be an attempt at forgiveness, Hime takes Jin to a drink and then tricks him into going out implying that she is just going to dance. After he is separated from the rest she uses the bottle glass from the dropped alcohol bottle and stabs Jin and says that the clan required a stronger leader. Jin’s death is then very realistic, and a part of the festive commotion, which not only consolidates Hime’s position for her new clan but also elevates her to a new level of power.

What is more, Suzie and her group now have another problem – the extraction of the killing code from Sunny is intended by Yakuza. Suzie concludes that Masa must have encoded Sunny to react violently when she utter phrases that she frequently uses and decides to use this as a opportunity. During the festival she picks a microphone and says a phrase which triggers the killer instinct in Sunny. Sunny is now fully armed and uses her blasters to attack Tanaka so that he cannot even transfer this poisonous code to another robot.

Near the end of the episode, Suzie approaches Sunny who attempts to flee because she is convinced that the only way to protect all is to go away. Suzie, however, does not allow Sunny to die, take her life – it shows her getting acquainted with Zen to introduce him to the AI in a rather emotional scene. Finally in this series, even Mixxy who normally remains so mysterious gives Sunny an option that says he can change her programme to good and get rid of the bad one. It turns out Hiromasa can take Sunny to Tokyo where there is someone, who can do it. However, the Yakuza will not quit searching for Sunny, that is when the group decides to split up for Zen’s sake.

The episode concludes with a twist as it is shown that Mixxy, who has been given the mission to transport Sunny to Tokyo, is actually a traitor. The very last scene of the series illustrates when Sunny gets into the back of Tanaka’s truck, grinning and having no idea of the deceit, reveals that Mixxy has been cooperating with Hime. The look on her face is of sorrow, however in her actions she is assisting Hime to obtain valuable information on Suzie. This twist makes Sunny and Suzie’s situation uncertain, which creates the possibility for the sequel to the story.

The ending of Sunny is perfect for the series it conveys the ideas of trust and treason, the negative effect of artificial intelligence and the show is based on the setting of Japan’s criminal world. As the episode comes to an end, one is left with more questions than answers but with infinite anticipation of what next for Suzie and Sunny in their dangerous escapades.
