John Dutton is the unbreakable head of the Dutton family and owner of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. He has always been at the center of the show’s power struggles and family problems. John, played by Kevin Costner, is a strong and honest man who fiercely defends his family and land. Fans are shocked by a shocking turn of events in the first episode of the second half of Yellowstone Season 5. John’s fate is now uncertain.
In Episode 9, John Dutton’s story takes a dark turn when he is found dead in his bathroom at the governor’s mansion in Montana. he seems to have died from a gunshot wound. His John’s body is found but there’s no way to be sure it was him—because—his face isn’t visible. The scene is scary and mysterious. People especially his family feel a lot of emotions and suspicions at this strange moment.
John’s death makes his children, Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) feel a lot of different things. When John doesn’t show up for his impeachment hearing, which was set off by their ambitious and sneaky brother Jamie (Wes Bentley) they rush to the scene. When Beth gets there, she is sure that Jamie planned the murder of her father. At the same time, Kayce finds it hard to believe that Jamie, who is usually cold, could go that far.
As the tension rises, Jamie, who just recently worked with Sarah (Dawn Olivieri) to kill Beth, seems to get a strange call that suggests the hit on John was successful. Afterwards, Jamie speaks at a press conference to say that John’s death was officially a suicide. Beth and Kayce are shocked when they hear the news on the radio. They don’t understand how John, who was always strong—could kill himself in this way. Beth, convinced this was no suicide, now sees her brother Jamie as a direct threat.
Jamie’s sadness and guilt point to a complicated web of lies and tricks. He is shocked and can’t believe what he is hearing. It’s like he wasn’t apart of the plan that killed—John. Sarah, on the other hand, tries to persuade him that he has won and that, by killing his father, Jamie now has power. That being said, Jamie can’t get rid of the feeling that his ambition has cost him a heavy and bloody price.
While this is going on, the other Duttons get together, torn between grief and anger. John Dutton’s death changes the balance of power in the family and at Yellowstone Ranch. John’s death and the supposed “suicide” remain a mystery. Beth and Kayce are left with a haunting question; was Jamie really responsible for their father’s death? If so, how far are they willing to go to get justice?
Things will never be the same for the Dutton family after the last episodes of Yellowstone air. What will happen because of John Dutton’s death could lead to revenge, betrayal, and maybe even more loss. The ranch is filled with mystery about how he died, and the truth, whatever it is, will change the Dutton family for all time.
