What Happened to Maria Callas’ Dogs?

Angelina Jolie‘s performance in Netflix‘s biographical drama Maria shows how lonely opera legend Maria Callas was in her last days. In the movie, her dogs are comforting, giving her peace during the quiet and often painful times of her life. This painting shows how much Maria Callas loved her dogs, who were always by her side through good times and bad.

Maria Callas’ Lifelong Love for Dogs

Maria Callas loved dogs very much, and her closeness to them was well known throughout her life. Luchino Visconti, the director of the opera, gave her her first dog, a small black poodle named Toy. She couldn’t live without Toy right away. Toy went with Maria everywhere, from airports to the Metropolitan Opera. She even went to court for a pre-trial hearing.

She loved Toy more than anyone else. Maria was once asked if Toy could ride in the luggage compartment while they were on a plane. She said no and made sure he stayed by her side the whole way. Toy also shared her most private moments, like when she slept at the foot of her bed every night. Maria had a big oil painting made to remember Toy after he died. It hung in her bedroom until she died.

The Dogs That Came After After getting Toy, Maria kept adding dogs to her life. She had a dog named Tea when she was married the first time. Later, when she was dating Aristotle Onassis, he gave her two dogs, Pixie and Djedda. These two stayed with her until she died in 1977.

Maria had a strong bond with her dogs. She once had her maid Bruna fly her dogs from Paris to be with her when she went to New York for masterclasses. Maria thought of her dogs as family, not just pets. They gave her the unconditional love and loyalty that she often felt was missing in her human relationships.

Pixi and Djedda were with Maria Callas when she died. They were so sad about her death that they had to be moved to a different room. Both dogs were very old at the time, and they both died a few years after Maria did.

Maria’s love for her dogs often showed how much she wanted to connect with others on a deeper level. “Only my dogs will not betray me,” she said one time. They were like having children, but she never had any. They filled a need that nothing else could. The dogs in Maria’s life and in Maria represent the unwavering love and comfort that Maria Callas sought, even when things were at their worst.
