Based on a True Story Season 2 begins three months after the shocking events of Season 1. The first episode, “Liquid Gold,” shows what happened after Ava and Nathan helped cover up Ruby’s murder, how Simon was then blamed, and how they tried to keep up a normal life as new parents. Another new problem comes up when Ava’s sister Tory leaves for Mexico with a serial killer named Matt. This makes room for new plot twists. Now, Episode 2, “Control F for Murder,” steps things up a notch. Matt and Tory’s engagement could ruin Ava and Nathan’s already unstable lives.
Based On A True Story Season 2 Episode 2 Recap: A Shocking Proposal
In the beginning of the episode, Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan (Chris Messina) are trying to hide how shocked they are when Matt (Tom Bateman) and Tory (Liana Liberato) say they are getting married. Ava and Nathan pull Tory aside because they really don’t want her to get married to a serial killer. But Tory responds with harsh accusations, saying that Ava and Nathan used Matt’s “illness” for their old podcast.
Tory is proud to say that Matt hasn’t killed anyone in 98 days, which shows that Matt has changed and is sober. Ava is still not sure, pointing out that Tory is the perfect victim for Matt: she is young and brunette. This family intervention doesn’t solve anything, so Nathan and Ava have to face a scary truth: Tory’s life may be in danger right now.
Matt’s Struggle with His Urges
Matt’s journey in this episode goes deep into the conflict inside him. Even though he tells everyone that he is now sober, moments show that he is still struggling with his violent urges. In a scary scene, Matt is seen staring at a knife and clearly fighting the urge to cut himself. He tries to be normal by making friends with Tory and helping plan the wedding, but his dark side is always there, just below the surface.
Matt uses the wellness lessons he learned in Mexico to help him control his urges to kill, which leads to a strange and darkly funny moment. As the episode goes on, though, the holes in his resolve become very clear.
Ava’s New Friend Brings Trouble
At the same time, Ava is trying to adjust to being a mom while her life is falling apart. At a baby yoga class, she meets Chloe, who is also a new mom. At first, Chloe seems like a good person to have around to help Ava. If Chloe seems too interested in Ava’s life, though, that’s a red flag.
People are worried about Chloe because she is crazy about true crimes and wants to know everything about Ava’s podcast past. Ava starts to worry that Chloe might find out that she and Nathan killed Ruby. This side story adds to the tension because Ava has to balance being a mother with keeping her dark secrets hidden.
Nathan’s Mistake
Nathan, who is always the reluctant partner, tries to keep his mind on his job as a tennis coach to keep things from getting too crazy. But his fear of Matt makes him want to look into it more. He sneaks through Matt’s things and finds a disturbing journal with scary drawings and writings that make it seem like Matt hasn’t really changed.
Nathan tells Ava what he found, but Tory cuts them off in the middle of their conversation. She is so mad that she accuses them of interfering with her relationship and making it worse. This fight makes things worse between the siblings and makes Tory trust Matt even more.
A Return to Murder?
As the episode builds up, a suspenseful scene builds to a climax. Matt and Tory invite Ava, Nathan, and a few other people to a small engagement dinner. Matt’s behavior gets more and more erratic during the dinner. Both Ava and Nathan look tense when he makes jokes about death and the knives on the table.
Later that night, Ava sneaks into Matt’s kitchen to talk to him face-to-face. She tells him to stay away from Tory, but Matt says something scary like, “People don’t change as much as they think.” As Ava walks away, scared, the camera stays on Matt as he sharpens a knife, giving the impression that his bad side may soon come out.
Based On A True Story Season 2 Episode 2 Ending: Ava’s Guilt
At the end of the episode, Ava is feeling guilty about how she helped Matt turn into the monster he is now. Even though Tory is mad and denies it, Ava is determined to do whatever it takes to protect her sister. Nathan and her agree that they need to stop Matt and Tory from being together before it’s too late.
The latest episode of “Control F for Murder” is tense and darkly funny, and it makes things even more complicated for Ava and Nathan. The episode sets up a dangerous path forward, with Matt on the verge of a relapse and Chloe’s nosiness adding another layer of danger. Will Ava and Nathan’s secrets stay hidden, or will the lies they worked so hard to make fall apart? Based on a True Story is about to get even more crazy.
