What about V.C. Andrews’ Dawn?
A member of the Longchamp family named Dawn Cutler is introduced to us in Part 1 of Dawn. She has a loving father, a humble upbringing, and a deep bond with her brother. However, when a startling fact about her real family history is exposed, her entire world is thrown upside down.
Dawn is unintentionally thrown into a new family who are desperate to alter her life for the better and who have their own secrets. Her grandmother Lillian, who demands strict obedience and administers terrible punishments for disobedience, must be dealt with. She is initially referred to as Eugenia and must negotiate her way around her demands.
Even though Dawn’s new family, the Culters, is well-off, they are still susceptible to curses and bad luck. In the absence of Dawn being able to maintain her own identity and pursue her own goals, there is something enigmatic about this family that threatens to absorb her. Her fight to maintain her sense of self and her goals in the face of a controlling family is explored in the film.
