The 1973 move to Buddah Records can be considered another turning point: the series performed the chart-topping ‘Midnight Train to Georgia,’ which received a Grammy. Considering this, this song became a hit as it is a story of a dream and struggle which, in fact, Knight embodies.

From her first marriage to James Newman she has two children, James “Jimmy” Gaston Newman III (born 1962) and Kenya Maria Newman (born 1963) but she divorced him in 1973. She then married Band leader music executive finacial tycoon Barry Hankerson with whom she has a son by the name Shanga (born August 1, 1976).  Although, this marriage was dissolved, Knight’s commitment to the family still prevails as a major focus in her life.  Knight married motivational speaker Les Brown in 1995 and their marriage ended in divorce in 1997.

Born and baptized in the Baptist church, Knight strengthened her faith up to the point of joining the Mormon church in the last 1990s. Knight married a motivational speaker and former Reynolds High School alumnus, William McDowell in 2001. They reside in Fairview, North Carolina, where they own a community center.
