FBI Season 7 Episode 4 Recap: In tonight’s episode of FBI on CBS, called “Doubted” a dangerous predator hides in the shadows, carefully targeting young women and avoiding capture. But when this dangerous person makes threats against someone close to the FBI, it gets personal and pulls the team into a scary case of lies, delusion, and danger. Sydney Ortiz’s life as a special agent is turned upside down when her sister Melanie becomes the target of a serial killer with a scary signature. The FBI will be put to the test in this case, and Sydney will show how far she will go to protect the people she cares about.
Case of the Day: A Brutal Encounter Close to Home
Sydney’s sister Melanie almost gets taken away during a scary attempt. During her fight, she scares off the masked attacker by waving her dad’s police badge. The attacker runs away because they are scared and don’t want to draw attention to themselves. Melanie is shaken but not hurt. As the police look into it, they don’t find any evidence of forced entry, which makes Melanie’s story seem less likely. Because she has had mental health problems in the past—the authorities don’t believe her claims— which makes her feel alone. Sydney (Lisette Olivera) isn’t sure, though, and she won’t let her sister’s case go to waste.
A Profiler’s Determination
As a profiler for the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, Sydney tells her boss, Isobel Castille (Alana de la Garza), about the case and asks for help finding the person who hurt her sister. When Isobel thinks about how close she was to her family, she agrees to help and the investigation begins. Still, agents OA Zidan (Zeeko Zaki) and Scola (John Boyd) are not sure because there isn’t enough solid evidence in the case. Maggie Bell (Missy Peregrym), another agent believes Melanie’s story, though, and she and Sydney work together to find out more.
A Trail of Doubts
As the team starts to figure out what happened, they find out that Melanie has been getting flowers from a fan who doesn’t want to be identified. The fact that the same flowers were sent to Jennifer Murray (Raina Silver)—another woman gives them a clue about who sent the flowers. But Jennifer has disappeared, which should set off alarm bells. Sydney wants to join the case even though she doesn’t have much experience in the field. Things get tense when she has to learn how to work with her coworkers.
The Pattern of the Predator
Jennifer is found high on drugs and badly hurt. In her testimony, she says that her attacker talked to her as if they were in a relationship, which made her feel uncomfortable. Even worse, he told her she was his “first,” which Sydney knows right away is a crazy fantasy. The team finds a scary pattern; this man has raped and abducted at least seventeen women in New York City, all of whom have had similar experiences. The NYPD had forgotten about the cases but the FBI is determined to help these victims get justice.
A Web of Surveillance and Betrayal
As they look into it, they find Sentinel Alarms, a security company with a strange link: its system had failed on the night of each kidnapping. Two men with ties to the company are being looked at with suspicion: Justin Halverson, a former worker with a shady past, and Tom McGrath, who used to be his boss. Even though Justin says he has nothing to do with it, he does say that McGrath has been spying on women through their security systems. McGrath had even teamed up with a man he only called “Roy,” who liked the same weird things he did. This pair has been attacking women for their own sick pleasure. Roy is the attacker and McGrath is the sex worker.
A Desperate Manhunt
When the FBI comes to talk to McGrath, he tries to avoid being caught and even thinks about committing suicide before OA stops him. Even though he is being held, McGrath won’t give up any useful information about Roy. At the same time, Sydney is still looking into the case on her own because she has a personal stake in it. She looks into Roy’s past and finds out that he is the superintendent of an apartment complex, which gives him access to the homes of his victims. Roy was so focused on the idea of being a “gentleman” that he took the women back to their apartments after each attack because he thought he was keeping them safe.
The Fight Between Sydney and Roy
Sydney goes up to Roy by herself because she wants to stop his rampage, but her bravery quickly turns dangerous. Roy, who is crazy and unstable, holds her hostage. During a tense standoff, Sydney uses his warped sense of honor to get him to kill himself rather than keep committing crimes. Sydney makes it through, but is shaken. She goes back to the FBI with a new sense of purpose.
Isobel praises Sydney’s bravery but reminds her how important it is to work together. Sydney has grown from this case and is ready to do her job and help those who need it most, both on her own and with the help of her team. When the show ends, the FBI team is a little stronger and Sydney is more sure of her place with them.
