The exciting start to Season 13 of Chicago Fire set the stage for a lot more, and Episode 2, “Ride the Blade,” looks like it will keep things going strong. This episode will air next week and continue the thrills and personal stories of the firemen at Firehouse 51.
A Short Recap of the First Episode
We saw some big changes in the Season 13 opening. Stella Kidd and Kelly Severide finally talked about the idea of having a child, but it looks like they’re not quite on the same page. Stella decided to tell Severide that she does not want to have children at the moment after a dramatic rescue of children with Severide’s approval. This means we are going to find out how their relationship started and why, as director, Andrea Newman noted, Stella is not sure whether to have a child this season.
On the other hand, Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) of Firehouse 51 was introduced who changed many rules which include no use of cell phones while in meals and meet his subordinates secretly. It is obvious that there is tension between Pascal and Severide. Pascal tells Severide that family members shouldn’t work the same shift, which is a subtle dig at his relationship with Kidd. The show ended on a mysterious note, with questions about Pascal’s personal life and links to the past. Herrmann and Mouch’s friendship was in the news, and there was an interesting link between their jobs in the future.
What’s Next in Episode 2?
While listening to “Ride the Blade,” the drama keeps building. Damon, Severide’s new half-brother, will be the main character. Kidd tells Damon what to do during a call, but he doesn’t do it. He asks Severide for help. This situation is sure to make Severide and Kidd fight, which will put their relationship to the test even more.
On a lighter note, Herrmann will be on a personal journey to spice things up with his wife Cindy. He will be looking for the perfect scent to get them excited about each other again. This side story is meant to add some humor and heart to the show and balance out the more serious drama.
Newman’s Take on the Season
The writers are calling this season the “Haunted Season,” according to showrunner Andrea Newman, because many of the characters are dealing with their pasts and problems that haven’t been fixed. This is true for both Violet and Carver – their family and ex-lover issues just seem to keep reappearing. Carver hasn’t been to Texas in six weeks, but there is a long way from calm between him and Violet. The two of the many stories is that of the two individuals trying to navigate their lives after having some feeling lingering on even when they know it is best to let it go.
Newman also gave hints that Severide’s new family duties and his friendship with Kidd were causing him stress. A new part of their lives will be added when Severide’s half-brother Damon comes along. Damon’s problems won’t directly stop Severide and Kidd from starting a family, but they will make things even harder than they already are.
Episode 2, “Ride the Blade,” shows Damon not following Kidd’s instructions during a call. He then asks Severide for help, which puts Severide in a tough spot between his wife and his new brother. At the same time, Herrmann looks for the perfect smell to make his relationship with Cindy more exciting. This episode has a lot to look forward to because the characters are still being pushed to their limits by love, family, and duty. Stay tuned for more exciting events in Firehouse 51!
