Based On A True Story Season 2 Episode 1 Recap — “Liquid Gold”

Date:

The dark comedy by Peacock Based on a True Story is back with a thrilling first episode of Season 2, called “Liquid Gold.” After the shocking ending of Season 1, the show picks up three months later, with Ava and Nathan Bartlett (Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina) cleaning up after Ruby’s murder. This episode does a great job of setting the scene for a new chapter full of lies, guilt and shocking revelations. The Bartletts used to want to be famous with their true crime podcast but now they are caught in a web of secrets that could destroy their lives.

Based On A True Story Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: Getting rid of the past

At the beginning of the episode, Ava and Nathan talk to a specialist about their baby Jack’s feeding problems. The new parents are worn out from raising a baby and keeping a dark secret at the same time. In a flashback, we see what happened after Ruby was killed. In their beach house—Ava and Nathan quickly clean up the bloody scene of the crime. When Ruby’s boyfriend Simon shows up out of the blue, the tension rises. Ava lies about being in labor to explain the blood because she has to think of something quickly. Even though the trick works, she starts to labor right after.

In the present day, Nathan tells the consultant that Jack’s birth was stress-free, which is a clear lie meant to hide how bad that night was.

Simon in a Frame

Nathan calls Matt (Tom Bateman), the Westside Ripper, for help in the next part of the flashback. Matt makes plans to put the blame for Ruby’s death on Simon. Someone puts blood in Simon’s car, which leads to his arrest. At the same time, Ava and Nathan are dealing with guilt and fear. As they deal with the effects of their actions, they are barely trying to look like a normal suburban couple.

A Sister’s Dangerous Love Story

In the present, Nathan gets a picture from Matt, who is said to be getting over his killer instincts at a wellness center in Mexico. But the picture shows something scary: Tory, Ava’s sister, played by Lilian Liberato, is with Matt. Toy, who doesn’t know that Matt has killed people before, seems in love with him. Nathan goes to Mexico to get her because he is afraid for her safety.

The Ghosts of the Past

Ava, who was left behind, struggles with her own feelings of guilt. It’s all about Ruby’s murder at her meeting with other moms who like true crime shows. When Ava finds out that Simon has been released on bail, it makes her even more worried. Later, she has a scary vision of Ruby’s bloody ghost in her car, which reminds her of how she and Nathan helped frame an innocent man.

Mexico’s Spies

Nathan talks to Tory in Mexico, where she is taking care of a garden outside the wellness center. Their conversation shows that Tory believes Matt has changed and trusts him. Nathan tells her about Matt’s bad past, but Tory doesn’t believe him and says that Nathan and Ava are using Matt for their podcast. She supports Matt’s efforts to change, even though it’s clear that he is in danger.

At the same time, Matt tells Nathan something shocking. He then tells her that Simon killed Ruby, which is a surprise. A flashback shows Simon stabbing Ruby during a fight, then running away in fear. He came back to find Ruby’s body gone. Matt had taken it because he saw a chance to get what he wanted.

The Revelation of Simon

Ava goes to see Simon, who is now under house arrest, back in Los Angeles. He says Ruby’s death was an accident, but he doesn’t know what happened to her body. Ava tries to stay calm even though she knows it’s buried under their old tennis court. When Simon sees texts from Nathan that say Nathan knows Simon killed Ruby, Ava cleverly sets off Simon’s ankle monitor, which lets her get away.

A Surprise No One Wants

Ava and Nathan get back together at home. Nathan is glad that Tory has decided to go back to law school so that they can finally stop arguing about whether to use formula or breast milk. But their short break is cut short when Tory and Matt show up out of the blue and announce that they are getting married. Ava and Nathan are on edge because Matt’s scary presence and Tory’s carefree happiness make them realize that the choices they made in the past are still following them around.

Based on a True Story One of the first episodes of Season 2 sets the stage for another darkly comedic look at obsession, morality, and the results of one’s actions. Ava and Nathan’s already crazy lives are made even more complicated by the fact that they are parents and are also hiding crimes. Since Tory is involved with Matt and Simon is out on bail, the Bartletts’ secrets are getting closer than ever to being found out. This means that future episodes will likely have more twists and laughs.
