Date:

Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 7 Recap: In this week’s episode of Chicago Med, family ties, workplace rivalries and life-or-death choices all come together, creating a lot of tension. In the chaos of the emergency department, lives hang in the balance while personal conflicts bubble over.  With so much at stake, the doctors have to deal with tough moral decisions, relationships and shocking news. Will the stress be too much for them to handle, or can they keep it together? Here’s a detailed recap of the intense events that unfolded in “Family Matters.”

An unexpected side story starts the episode; Dr. John Frost (Darren Barnet) learns about a new tradition at Chicago Med: a game with a pin. What is the goal? To sneak up on someone and pin it on them. The person who has the pin at the end of the day has to buy drinks at Molly’s, which is always busy on payday. Nurse Trini (Marie Tredway) manages to pin Frost, which sets off a chain of events that Frost tries to avoid. However, an emergency influx of patients happens while neither of the department heads is available to helpand Frost is stopped in his tracks.

Dr. Lenox (Sarah Ramos) is still dealing with the effects of a choice he made in a previous episode that caused a lot of controversy. She is called to a case review about the death of teen boy Jordan Bennett. People are looking at Lenox closely because he went against the rules when he rushed into surgery without getting the boy’s parents’ permission first. Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber)  strongly disagrees with what she did and wants her fired, saying she is careless. Archer blames Lenox for the boy’s death during the case review and things get so heated that he is asked to leave.

Talk about Archer’s outburst is going around the hospital like wildfire. A friend of his, Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram), tries to calm him down by telling him not to force his will on Lenox’s fate. Archer isn’t giving up, though. His belief is that Lenox should be fired, but others, including Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerso), see that the two doctors have the same goal. Sharon talks to Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt), who tells her to talk to staff members to get a sense of the “temperature” of the ED. But most of them are too busy with hospital politics to speak out because they’re afraid of what will happen if they criticize Lenox.

Afterward, Dr. Naomi Howard (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut), who is still being taught by Lenox, hears Sharon and Charles’ conversation. This gives Sharon the confidence to talk to Lenox about the problems she’s been having. While all of this is going on, Dr. Charles is busy taking care of a young patient named Jemma who has a seriouspancreatic problem. To avoid looking like her overweight biological mother, Jemma has been taking weight loss drugs, which Charles finds out is linked to her condition. Jemma learns a lot about herself after the revelation. Charles tells her to stop using drugs and go to therapy to deal with her deeper problems.

In the ER, another life-or-death situation is happening at the same time. Declaration, a man who was in a car accident, is brought in seriously hurt. Things get complicated, though, when his mistress shows up at the hospital and is met by his wife, Sheryl. Declan had already set up a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order after seeing his own mother suffer from prolonged life support. However, his wife and mistress have different ideas about whether his wishes should be observed. The doctors, Ripley (Luke Mitchell) and Frost, are in the middle because they have to do what Declan’s wife, Sheryl, tells them to do. As they work to get him back on track, Sheryl has to make a hard choice: she has to respect her husband’s wishes, even though his affair is making her feel bad.

Asher talks to a man who needs a liver transplant because he ruined his own organ through drinking too much. This case is different, but just as emotional. Alex, the man’s son, is asked to be a living donor, but he has a hard time making the choice because his father left him years ago. Asher sees herself in Alex’s struggle and urges him to make the sacrifice, but Alex refuses in the end. Asher realizes something important about herself at this moment: she can still try to fix her broken relationship with her sister. Her sister is called again and she hopes that one day the call will be answered.

As the episode ends, the drama in the ED ends, but not before some bad things happen. Since Archer was demoted, he gets the pin and has to buy drinks at Molly’s by himself. It’s a bittersweet irony that Archer, who used to speak out against Lenox, is now on the outside after Sharon makes Lenox the only Chief of the ED. Howard had told Sharon how great Lenox was as a teacher and said she was the best he had ever had.

“Family Matters” shows that in the world of Chicago Med, no one’s personal life is ever really separate from the chaos of the ER. Relationships are changing and pressures are still building.
