Abbott Elementary Season 4 Episode 6 Recap — The Deli

Date:

Abbott Elementary Season 4 Episode 6 Recap: The latest episode of Abbott Elementary is called “The Deli,” and it shines a light on Ava’s unusual way of leading, which goes against what most people think a good leader should be like. Someone asks Ava Coleman (Janelle James), who is always brave and different, to give a “Ed-Talk” to principals across the district to share her ideas. But Ava always comes up with unique ideas for presentations, like “the art of the scheme” and “intimidation as motivation.” At the same time, a popular local deli is in danger of becoming more expensive, which leads to a funny protest and brings the Abbott staff together in ways they didn’t expect.

Abbott Elementary Season 4 Episode 6 Recap

The episode starts with Ava getting an unexpected invitation to speak at an Ed-Talk, an event put on by the district for principals to share good leadership tips. Manny (guest star Josh Segarra), a district representative, makes the request because he knows that Ava’s results speak for themselves, even though her style isn’t typical. Less kids are missing school at Abbott Elementary, test scores are going up, and after-school programs are doing really well. Ava’s approach is different from the norm, but it has helped the school, making her an unlikely but undeniably good leader.

At first, Ava wasn’t interested, especially when she learned it wouldn’t pay. But Janine (Quinta Brunson) and other staff members persuade her, reminding her that Abbott’s standing in the district could improve with such recognition. Janine says that the district’s resources are very important to their school and that any goodwill could help. Ava decides to give the Ed-Talk another chance because she thinks it could help others and she sees it as a chance to share her unique “Ava-lanche” approach with other principals.

Manny is horrified by Ava’s ideas for her presentation, though, when she runs them by him. He quickly rejects ideas like “using fear as a motivator” and Ava’s story about renting out the school gym for activities that aren’t allowed. Because of this fight, Manny has to cancel her speech, which hurts Ava a lot, despite how confident she acts. Janine sees that Ava is upset and tells her to think about the “why” behind her decisions instead of just the “how.” This makes Ava change her mind about how she was going about things.

In a different story, Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph), Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter), and Jacob (Chris Perfetti) work together to protect a local deli that is in danger from a trendy smoothie shop called “Fruit There It Is.” The deli is very important to the community, especially to Melissa and Barbara, who see it as a neighborhood mainstay. But Gregory (Tyler James Williams), who is excited that a smoothie shop has opened nearby, doesn’t want to drive the sixteen minutes it takes him to get one.

Jacob feels compelled to fight gentrification, so he gets the community to protest, fully embracing his “woke” persona. As soon as Melissa and Barbara visit Fruit There It Is and try a few free samples, they start to change their minds about their position. In a funny turn of events, they go back to Abbott too excited about the smoothies, which makes Jacob sad about his friends’ “betrayal.”

TYLER JAMES WILLIAMS

Jacob is determined to stay true to the cause, so he turns down the smoothie samples that his coworkers offer. However, he later admits his weakness when Gregory notices an açañ stain on Jacob’s shirt. When B.L.A.C.K.S. (a community group seen in previous episodes) shows up to the protest outside the deli, it picks up speed in a way that no one expected. Jacob quickly tries to change the crowd’s attention to something else. He tries, but fails, to change the focus of the protest to something else. He even chants “Frack is whack,” but that doesn’t make the protesters change their minds.

At the same time, the owner of the deli decides to keep his business open and adds new smoothie flavors like “Menthol Madness” and “Mango Mortadella Fusion” in response to the protest. The deli wins, but people have mixed feelings about the sudden change to the menu.

Back at Abbott, Ava gives her updated Ed-Talk to district principals. This time, she focuses on how she truly cares for and empowers her students and staff. She shows her humor and bravery by lovingly making fun of Janine, but her message about helping students is sincere. Other people in her field admire her hard work, and she’s surprised to learn that private speaking gigs can actually pay well. Ava seizes the chance to remind everyone that her wit and wisdom aren’t free by saying that more “Ed-Talks” will cost money.
