Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 3 “All Kinds of Crazy” Recap

Date:

In the third episode of Season 13 of Chicago Fire “All Kinds of Crazy,” tensions within Firehouse 51 reached a breaking point. In this episode, Lieutenant Stella Kidd, her husband Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney), and Severide’s younger brother Damon, who is stirring up trouble on the team—discuss their growing complexity. Under the new rigid Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney), Kidd’s leadership is put to the test as Severide’s allegiance is divided between his family and his duties. A complicated arson investigation is ongoing in the background, and it reveals a shocking surprise that gives the program a tense element. “All Kinds of Crazy” keeps the viewer guessing while delivering intense emotional highs and depicting lives and livelihoods in jeopardy.

Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 3 Recap

Severide confronts Damon at the beginning of the episode, telling him that one of them must leave Firehouse 51. Despite not being a horrible firefighter- Damon has a lot of mental baggage that causes him to cause problems both on and off the field. Both Severide and Kidd concur that dealing with family members complicates things — particularly when there are a lot on the line. Kidd is tasked with approaching Chief Pascal about moving Damon back to the floater pool, a decision she believes will subject her to further scrutiny from the chief.

Kidd is already under strain as she gets ready for this tough talk. Pascal wonders why her truck has a high turnover rate because he doesn’t like her leadership style or the Girls on Fire program. Kidd is anxious about Pascal’s response — particularly in light of the fact that Damon is her brother-in-law. She has a brief respite when a fire alarm ends her meeting, but the stress remains.

Violet is battling a personal dispute in the interim. She regrets her decision to break up with Carver and texts him while intoxicated to let him know how she feels. However, Violet is devastated to learn that Carver returned from his vacation with a new girlfriend and that she might have lost her opportunity.

Ritter sustains injuries at the scene and is taken to the hospital as the crew attempts to put out the restaurant fire. Cody, a previous renter who was kicked out of the apartment above the business, comes under suspicion right away. Although Cody acknowledges entering the building to gather his possessions, it remains unclear if the fire was started on purpose or accidentally.

Returning to the firehouse, Kidd summons the bravery to discuss Damon with Pascal. Pascal expresses skepticism—noting that Kidd’s reports included no mention of any problems with Damon. Pascal raises the possibility that Kidd’s leadership may be the source of the issue when she describes the problems with trust surrounding Damon’s disobedience. He even whispers to Mouch that a lieutenant post might become available soon, hinting that she would be the next to go.

In the meantime Damon fabricates a story for Pascal at their meeting accusing Kidd of giving imprecise instructions and saying his errors were unintentional. Pascal believes Damon when he tells him further undermining Kidd’s credibility and providing Pascal with an opportunity to stir things up. Now Severide and Kidd are in a precarious situation with Damon and the Firehouse 51 leadership.

Mouch comes in for Kidd at a pivotal point, acting as a loyal friend and ally. Taking Kidd’s record with him — he pays Pascal a visit at home, stressing her excellent work ethic and refuting the rumor that she is the cause of the turnover problems. His efforts are rewarded when Pascal changes his mind and decides to send Damon back to the floater pool after realizing that he can no longer trust Kidd.

When Severide finds fresh evidence in the arson inquiry, the event takes a drastically different turn. As first thought it appears that a broken rice cooker was not the source of the fire. Rather, it had paint thinner poured into it, transforming the device into a homemade bomb. The plot twist occurs when Grace, the restaurant owners’ daughter, confesses to lighting the fire in an effort to diffuse a heated argument between her parents about the direction of the family business.

As the show comes to an end, Damon snaps at Severide, saying that he abandoned him just when he needed help the most. During a heartbreaking exchange, Damon tells Severide, “You are Benny,” making a harsh analogy to their father, who had a reputation for disappointing people. Severide and Damon’s brotherly relationship appears to be irreversibly broken.

Chief Pascal gives Mouch the authority to decide who will remain on Truck 81 after becoming satisfied with her defense of Kidd. Even while Kidd feels like she has a tiny win at this point, it is still unclear if Pascal really believes in her.

“All Kinds of Crazy” follows up to its title with intertwining deeply personal concerns and career-threatening challenges, leaving viewers and characters alike wondering what lies ahead for Firehouse 51.
